Utility orders 150 MW of wind power
Energy retailer Reliance Wind Energy, based in Mumbai, has ordered turbines from Suzlon for a 150 MW wind farm at Kavthemahankal in the Sangli district of Maharashtra. Suzlon says the project, due for completion by 2008, will comprise 100 of its 1.5 MW turbines. When online, the wind farm will generate 380 million kWh a year, all of which will be bought by Reliance Energy to meet its obligation to buy renewable energy as laid out by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission. Reliance has previously announced plans to establish 500 MW of wind power by 2011. Last year it was reported to be talking to both GE Wind Energy and NEPC about potential projects, but these have not materialised yet.
