The case for continued support for renewable energy in Britain was boosted with the latest advice from an influential government appointed group. According to the British Government Panel on Sustainable Development, renewable energy development in Britain has been piecemeal and has lagged behind foreign initiatives. "The relative short termism of competitive markets means that market forces alone will not lead to the development of renewable resources on the necessary scale." The panel's third report adds: "A way must be found for energy prices to reflect the effect of energy use on climate change and the need to develop alternative sources of supply" . The panel -- led by Sir Crispin Tickell -- calls for a strategic energy policy to incorporate climatic costs into energy prices; promote energy efficiency; and continue to support non-fossil energy sources.
