NUON-Water elects green power only

NUON-Water, an independently operating subsidiary of Dutch utility NUON, recently announced it is to power its production and distribution activities exclusively through the use of electricity generated from renewable resources. On April 1, NUON-Water director H. Rotermundt signed a contract with NUON Duurzame Energie for the supply 22 million kWh of green electricity a year. It is estimated this will result in a 75% cut in NUON-Water's annual production of CO2 emissions. NUON-Water, which provides the Gelderland region with some 55 million cubic metres of drinking water annually, is the first Dutch water company to switch to green electricity for retrieval, purification and distribution of water. The company promises that the additional costs of the switch to clean energy will be met from its own operations and will have no impact on customer tariffs.
