The town of Calice Ligure in the Italian region of Liguria is seeking tenders for a project financing proposal to double the capacity of its wind station from the current 2.5 MW. The wind plant is the largest in northern Italy and consists of three turbines, a Nordex 800 kW turbine and two Vestas 850 kW units installed between 2001 and 2003. The city says in its tender request that it plans to install three more 850 kW turbines. The tender deadline was set at June 30 but will be extended until December 31 if no proposals are received. Elsewhere in Liguria, a recent ruling by Italy's Consiglio di Stato, the country's highest administrative court, should also pave the way for Varese Ligure to roughly double its wind power, says Varese Ligure mayor Michela Marcone. Varese Ligure currently has 1.5 MW of installed wind capacity. The court rejected an attempt by Italian environmental association Italia Nostra to block the expansion of the town's existing wind plant and highlighted Italy's commitment to meeting its Kyoto obligations in its decision, the second ruling of the kind by the court this year. The two towns together account for the region's total wind capacity.
