SINKING OF THE SHELL PLATFORM
Twelve German wind turbine manufacturers added their combined weight to the campaign against the sinking of the Shell oil platform "Brent Spar" in the Atlantic. In an initiative led by Nordtank, the companies protested against the now abandoned Shell strategy to solve its waste disposal problem in the depths of the ocean and informed Deutsche Shell that its products were under boycott. No Shell fuel was to be used for company cars and no lubricants or oils used in wind turbines unless the company agreed to dispose of Brent Spar properly on land. Perhaps of some surprise to Shell, the wind companies are now an economic force to be reckoned with. The industry in Germany expects to clock up sales of DEM 1 billion in 1995 and employs over 4,500 people. Most of these drive cars.
