Enercon awards construction firm contract to build foundations for 600 MW

Portuguese construction firm Domingos da Silva Teixeira (DST) has been awarded a EUR 30 million contract from German wind turbine manufacturer Enercon to build 300 foundations for wind turbines with a total capacity of 600 MW. The wind farms, due for completion in 2012, will be built across Portugal in Torres Vedras, Montalegre, Cinfães, Mértola, Tavira, Almodôvar, Lourinhã, Sabugal, Mondim de Basto, Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Vila Real and Arcos de Valdevez. Unusually for the Portuguese firm, DST is to substitute its traditional steel foundations with concrete for this development. DST's José Teixeira says the firm is currently taking part in calls to tender for similar projects in eastern Europe and is planning other bids in Spain. DST and Enercon also constructed the EUR 370 million, 240 MW Alto Minho I wind farm, at one time the biggest in Europe until overtaken this year by the 322 MW Whitelee wind farm in Scotland.
