CO2 emissions down
UK emissions of carbon dioxide were 148 million tonnes in 1995 -- 11 million tonnes lower than in 1990, reports the Department of the Environment. The reduction is accounted for largely by the switch to gas fired power generation since electricity privatisation in 1990. Nonetheless, power stations were still the major polluters, emitting 30% of total CO2, followed by road transport (20%).x
