British business backing
The UK business community favours tough targets for reducing greenhouse gases. Moreover, a clear majority of members of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) believes Europe should go it alone if global agreement cannot be secured at Kyoto. CBI members were surveyed in the run up to its annual conference in November. The survey shows that out of 734 responses, 83% want the world community to agree tough C02 reductions by 2010, while only 9% disagree. Opinion is more divided on whether Europe should go it alone. Nonetheless, 60% are in favour, with 30% against. Over three-quarters (77%) recognise that green taxes have a role to play -- but only if the overall tax burden on business is not raised.
