A new resin compound specially designed for turbine blades is being tested by Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa Eólica. The formula comes from Gairesa, a chemicals firm based in the region of Galicia. Gairesa's Senen Paz says the resin "could reduce blade costs by 10-20%." The company has no former links with the wind sector but hopes its new resin could create a ten-fold increase in turnover. Paz's sights are set extremely high, with hopes of cornering 10% of Spain's blade market. Gamesa's tests are being carried out under "a loose agreement" with Gairesa. Gamesa Eólica, which makes its own epoxy resin-fibreglass blades outside Galicia, already has a turbine assembly facility in the Galician capital, Santiago de Compostela.
