Danger on the horizon in Australia
Hopes for a lucrative future beyond 2007 for the Australian wind industry will likely rest on the backs of state governments. In recent years the federal government's Mandated Renewable Energy Target has been the driving force behind the country's wind development -- with the installation of 380 MW from virtually nothing prior to the legislation's introduction a few years ago. But last June the government refused to increase MRET's capacity cap, which threatens future development of thousands of MW. Now, four of Australia's seven states are taking a more proactive stance.
