Spanish government releases grid code for new and existing wind plant
The Spanish government's energy directorate has produced a grid code for both new and existing wind stations. The code is mainly the result of a grid analysis exercise carried out by national wind association Asocación Eólica Empresarial (AEE, formerly PEE) and grid operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE), which passed their conclusions to the directorate in June. AEE's Alberto Ceña confirms the code, if unmodified, will raise the existing 13 GW cap on wind capacity in Spain to 20 GW. It also demands that all wind plants, old and new, provide grid-fault ride-through capability to help maintain security of supply. New turbines must comply with the code from January 2007, while plant already online have until 2011 to meet its requirements. Ceña says ride-through capability for older technology will involve modifications to substations and control centres rather than to turbines.
