Turbine manufacturer Sinovel places 10 GW order
Major Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Sinovel has ordered electrical components to support the production of more than 10 GW of wind turbines -- over twice the installed wind capacity in China -- according to Greg Yurek, CEO of American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC), which is to supply the parts. The order value is $450 million. Sinovel makes a 1.5 MW turbine under a licence agreement with AMSC. The agreement includes first right of refusal for the American company to supply all the core electronics and control systems for the machine. Sinovel is also working with AMSC to develop a 3 MW machine and plans to start exporting turbines in the near future, says the American company's Kimberly Ciottone. "There is no doubt that Sinovel has global aspirations, but it remains to be seen what product they plan to ship outside China first," she adds.
