An indication of the lack of public knowledge of the benefits of wind energy in New Zealand was revealed in Christchurch lately. In calling for public comment on what to do about the smoggy winter conditions commonly found in Christchurch, one respondent said that changing over to wind power would not do any good because the smog only happened on still nights when the wind did not blow. In winter, Christchurch suffers from an inversion layer which traps particulate matter and other pollutants from the many wood and coal fires used for heating in the city. The city council is attempting to move people from fuel burners to electricity or gas to address the issue.
