Martifer finds new location for blade factory
Portugal's Martifer has changed the planned location of its new rotor blade factory from Porto de Aveiro in the central part of the country, to Vagos, about 13 kilometres to the south. The factory will be built in an industrial area of 350 hectares as part of a local strategic development plan project. The site will include a wind farm. Martifer is part of the Ventinveste group of companies that holds a concession from the Portuguese government to build 480 MW of wind power in eight wind farms, and in the process creating 1300 jobs at 19 industrial facilities. Martifer says it invested EUR 140 million in the construction of renewable energy assets during 2008, of which EUR 12 million was invested in wind farms in Portugal and EUR 14 million in wind farms in Brazil. Martifer targets nearly 500 MW of wind power capacity in Portugal, although not all of it will be controlled by the group, alongside 541 MW in Poland, 618 MW in Romania, 300 MW in Ukraine, 816 MW in the US, 1 GW in Australia -- as well as additional capacity in Germany and Bulgaria. The Portuguese company ended 2008 with 14 MW of installed wind capacity in Brazil, on the way to a target of 364 MW.
