Objections to wind beside the point in wind power goals
Norway is on course to meeting or even exceed its target of 3 TWh of wind power (2.4% of current electricity consumption) by 2010, delegates to a recent conference in Oslo were told. Erlend Broli of the energy ministry reckoned that the total could go as high as 3.8 TWh or more, Stavanger Aftenblad newspaper reports. Frederic Hauge of environment group Bellona was even more optimistic, suggesting 12 TWh was not unrealistic. He called for the government to use some of the energy generated by its controversial gas power program to make solar panels and wind turbines for the Third World. Recent objections by conservationists and local residents to big wind projects were beside the point, Hauge added. "If wind turbines turn out to have negative environmental consequences, all we have to do is tear them down," he told APOR news.
