Calcutta industries urged to utilise Kyoto's clean development mechanism
Industries in Calcutta, West Bengal, have been urged to take advantage of opportunities arising from the Kyoto Protocol's clean development mechanism (CDM). "If an industry in India can reduce its greenhouse gas load significantly more than that required by the regulatory bodies through application of green technology, it can come under CDM purview," said Tara Preston, who overseas CDM projects for Canada. Speaking at a CDM workshop organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Resource Futures International Canada and India's Tata Energy Research Institute, she urged quick action, noting the major hurdle to be faced was the long time taken for official recognition of a project for CDM status. Two projects from India are in the final stages of consideration. Gon Chowdhury of the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Authority added that the CDM concept will only succeed when linked to innovative projects.
