Wind's costs are rapidly converging with those of the "conventional" thermal sources of electricity generation. In some instances wind can undercut them. Cost reductions are partly due to economies of scale, partly to better production techniques. Offshore costs are still relatively high, but there is plenty of scope for them to fall rapidly. Latest indications from the gas futures market in America are that gas, wind's toughest competitor on price, will stay high for some time to come.
