Spanish firm Acciona Energy, a wind project developer and turbine manufacturer, has scrapped plans for a wind farm along the Molonglo Range in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), 15 kilometres east of Queanbeyan and 25 kilometres from Canberra. First proposed in 2004, the project was to comprise up to 60 turbines. "We have decided that the site does not meet our very strict standards for appropriate development," says the company's Brett Thomas. The company says it remains committed to building wind farms in New South Wales (NSW), the state where the ACT is located. The company's other Australian projects include the 66 MW Cathedral Rocks wind farm in South Australia, owned jointly with Roaring 40s, the 50 MW Woodlawn wind farm near Goulburn in NSW, and the 192 MW Waubra project near Ballarat in Victoria, which is currently under construction and will comprise 128 turbines. It also has approval to build further projects in NSW and Victoria totalling approximately 130 MW.
