Work has begun on a seabed survey in preparation for installing turbines at Barrow offshore wind farm, off the Cumbrian coast. It will enable engineers to assess the best way for turbines to be installed. Running for eight weeks, it uses a specialist survey vessel, the Seacore Excalibur. The plant will comprise 30 turbines in the east Irish Sea off Walney Island, with a power cable linked to Heysham in Lancashire. It is being developed by a consortium of Centrica, Danish company DONG and Norwegian electricity utility Statkraft. Centrica will buy the electricity to supply customers of its energy subsidiary British Gas.
