Tucson launches Arizona's first green power program
Tucson Electric Power Co of Arizona is launching the state's first green power program. On January 17 it announced that customers will be able to buy electricity from renewable sources. The GreenWatts program will not, initially at least, contain wind power. The decision shows, however, how utilities are increasingly offering such programs in response to demand from consumers. And such programs, even in a state that is not yet fully deregulated, are usually a stepping-stone to selling green electrons in a competitive market. The GreenWatts program will sell power from a landfill-methane plant at a premium price, says the utility. For $2 monthly, a customer can buy 20 kWh blocks.
