Plans for a $3.3 million gear unit manufacturing facility in Chennai, unveiled by German firm Flender, the parent company of wind turbine transmission company Winergy, could bring the cost of wind turbines in India down substantially, the industry hopes. At present, drive systems for wind turbines, which account for around 8% of total wind turbine costs in India, are mainly imported. Flender already has a sales, distribution and service office in Chennai. Its biggest customer to date is Suzlon Energy.
