UK's largest wind farm at Cairn Uish now generating bringing UK total to 979 MW
The UK's largest wind farm has been switched on bringing the country's combined wind capacity to 979 MW from 1234 turbines-representing some 0.7% of UK electricity supply. The 50.6 MW wind farm at Cairn Uish, Rothes, in Moray was developed by Fred Olsen Renewables. It comprises 22 Siemens turbines. According to the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA), 2005 is set to be a record year for new wind capacity. It expects 18 new wind farms totalling some 500 MW of capacity to be commissioned by the end of the year. The BWEA reports success in consenting, too, with 11 projects totalling 218 MW approved so far this year. With an additional 6180 MW already in the planning system, representing some 6% of UK electricity supply, the industry is on track to meeting the bulk of the government's 2010 targets for renewables, says BWEA.
