Fair emissions burden sharing promoted
A group of environmental parliamentarians from the EU, Japan, USA and Russia is pushing for a fairer approach to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. The Green Globe Task Force is promoting a worldwide "contraction and convergence" model. This aims for overall reductions per head of population based on equity over time, with per capita emissions in developed countries converging with those from developing nations by the middle of the 21st century. "We believe this offers an achievable package for developing countries in which they can still maintain some short term increases in industrial development," says British Member of the European Parliament Anita Pollack, a member of the GLOBE group. Speaking at a conference in London on climate change she added: "It provides a level playing field for fair and sustainable emissions reductions targets." Pollack said that if some of the major emitters reach an agreement along the lines that Green Globe suggests, the US might be persuaded to ratify the Kyoto agreement.
