Romania launches new renewables auction targeting 2GW onshore wind

The government of Romania has announced a second renewable energy tender to be held later this year targeting more than 3GW of new clean energy capacity, including 2GW of onshore wind.

Romanian energy minister Sebastian Burduja said the fossil fuel-reliant nation had the potential to become a “regional leader in renewable energy” as he launched the auction on Monday (12 May).

The government hopes to award contracts for 2GW of onshore wind projects and 1.47GW of solar PV projects in the auction.

The maximum strike prices are set at €80/MWh for wind power and €73/MWh for solar.

Romania expects to announce the auction winners in the third quarter of 2025.

The second renewables CfD follows the success of Romania’s inaugural renewable energy auction last year, which saw more than 1GW of onshore wind capacity auctioned – a result Burduja described as “exceeding expectations”.
