Ocean Winds installs first turbine at delayed French offshore wind farm

Ocean Winds has successfully installed the first wind turbine at its 496MW Îles d’Yeu et de Noirmoutier offshore wind farm off the west coast of France.

In total, 61 of Siemens Gamesa's 8MW turbines will be installed between May and September this year. The towers are being pre-assembled at the Port of Saint-Nazaire, before being installed offshore.

Ocean Winds – a joint venture of EDP Renewables and Engie – said the project located near the islands of Yeu and Noirmoutier will deliver enough electricity for around 800,000 people.

The Îles d’Yeu et de Noirmoutier project first secured a power deal in 2014 – before Ocean Winds was founded – but was then beset by legal challenges from associations and local traders in the following years.

It is due to be fully operational by the end of this year.

Yara Chakhtoura, managing director for Siemens Gamesa's French business unit, said that the company’s factory in Le Havre, northern France, “is central” to its targets for offshore wind in the country.

"We are proud to manufacture and install the turbines for this offshore wind farm and thereby contributing to the energy transition and decarbonisation in France,” Chakhtoura added.
