US utility Pacificorp seeks 3.7GW new wind resources

Pacific Northwest utility Pacificorp aims to add 3,782MW of new wind resources over the next 20 years, according to its new 2025 integrated resource plan (IRP), filed with regulators. The IRP also calls for 5,912MW of new solar capacity.

The wind addition consists of 2,267MW of new wind capacity by the end of 2030, 2,988MW by the end of 2035, and 3,782MW of cumulative new wind by the end of 2045. All of these additions will come from utility-scale projects.

Pacificorp would procure the new wind resources through a request for proposals. It would likely own some of these projects outright, and buy power from others.

The utility said this is in addition to its 1,564MW of contracted wind, some of which is not yet built. The utility currently owns or contracts a total of about 5,150MW of wind resources.

The IRP planning process assumes that the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) remains intact but the plan admits that the legislation’s future is unknown.

“While a repeal of the IRA is unlikely as that would require congressional approval, the Trump administration could slow the payment of grants and loans or rescind or modify regulations and guidance issued to date on how to implement provisions of the IRA,” it said.

Every two years, PacifiCorp files an IRP with the state utility commissions of its market area: Utah, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Idaho, and California.
