Swedish utility Vattenfall has taken a final investment decision on its 1.6GW-plus Nordlicht offshore wind cluster in the German North Sea.
It has also agreed to take full control of the project by buying the 49% stake currently owned by chemicals giant BASF.
The project consists of two phases – the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms – and will have a total capacity of 1,610MW.
BASF and LyondellBassell – both chemicals companies – as well as steelmaker Salzgitter are due to buy electricity from Nordlicht.
Construction is set to begin in 2026 ahead of commissioning in 2028.
The project will consist of 112 of Vestas’ V236-15.0MW turbines.
