Anti-wind group challenges permit for major US offshore project

A pressure group is asking the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to halt Avangrid’s New England Wind 1 and 2 projects off Massachusetts with the same method successfully used to void a key permit for the 2.8GW Atlantic Shores project off New Jersey.

ACK for Whales has filed a petition with the EPA arguing that air quality permits issued for the projects last April were deficient. Potential emissions from vessel activity if there is a blade failure were not accounted for, said ACK, citing the high-profile Vineyard Wind blade breakage last summer. The debris had to be cleared up and other blades checked.

In January, the group had vowed to sue over the 791MW New England Wind 1 project, which will sell its power to Massachusetts. The size of New England Wind 2 is not clear on Avangrid’s website. Both projects have secured all of the necessary federal permits.

President Donald Trump has prioritised stopping offshore wind.

“We would have filed this petition regardless of who is in the White House,” said ACK for Whales board member Amy DiSibio.

Avangrid could not immediately be reached for comment.
