Developer plans 1.1GW wind farm to produce synthetic fuels

Synthetic fuels producer HIF Global plans to build a 1.1GW wind farm in Uruguay to power a new facility in the country.

The Elena wind farm would be located in the north-eastern department of Paysandú and consist of 158 turbines with power ratings of 7.2MW.

Construction of the wind farm is expected to take two to three years, according to an environmental impact study published on the website of the country's environment ministry.

HIF Global is developing plants in several countries that can produce synthetic fuels from green hydrogen.

Synthetic fuels can replace fuels such as petrol and diesel in conventional motors without modification but are produced from green hydrogen, HIF Global said.

The company recently obtained approval from regional authorities to recategorise the land on which it plans to install its e-fuels facility in Paysandú.

“This approval represents a crucial institutional endorsement for the project and positions. It is a very significant step that allows us to move forward with the next stages of development,” said Martin Bremermann, CEO of HIF-Uruguay.

The company said Uruguay’s strength in renewable energy and port structure make it an ideal site for the production of synthetic fuels.
