RWE offshore wind farm to power data centre services

RWE has signed a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with data centre service provider Telehouse Europe.

Under the agreement, the German utility will supply electricity from the London Array offshore wind farm to Telehouse’s campus in the London docklands until the end of 2035.

RWE said that this will provide a "significant portion of the renewable energy" needed to power what Telehouse claims is "Europe's most connected data centre hub". It has not confirmed what portion of the project will provide power to Telehouse under the agreement.

The deal will ensure Telehouse’s customers have "reliable access” to renewable energy, said Olaf Lubenow, head of commodity solutions for the UK, and north and south Europe at RWE Supply & Trading.

The 630MW London Array wind farm is owned by a consortium of RWE, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Greencoat UK Wind and Masdar Energy UK.

It was the world’s largest offshore wind when it started commercial operations in 2013 – a title it held for five years.
