Siemens Gamesa turbine catches fire South American wind farm

A Siemens Gamesa wind turbine caught fire at the Valentines wind farm in eastern Uruguay on 4 February.

Firefighters from Santa Clara de Olimar attended the incident but the fire had already extinguished by the time they arrived on the scene.

A failure in the turbine motor is believed to have ignited the fire, according to a spokesperson for the firefighters. Nobody was injured at a result of the incident.

"We are aware of the incident occurred at Valentines wind farm. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, and a safety zone has been immediately set up around the turbine. We are currently undertaking an internal investigation to determine the cause of the incident," a Siemens Energy spokesperson said.

Launched in 2017, the 70MW Valentines wind farm consists of 35 G114-2.0 turbines. It is owned by state power utility UTE and located in the department of Treinta y Tres.
