First substation arrives for 2.6GW US offshore wind farm

The first of three substations for Dominion Energy’s 2.6GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project arrived at the Portsmouth marine terminal in the Port of Virginia at the end of January.

The substation is the first of its kind to ever arrive at a US east coast port and, at more than 4,000 tonnes, is the heaviest piece of equipment ever handled at the port.

Once operational, energy generated by the 176 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD wind turbines, located 44km off the coast of Virginia Beach, will be bundled at the offshore substation and exported to shore.

Construction is said to be on schedule to be complete in late 2026. The focus is currently on installation of the first offshore substation, continued export cable lays and onshore transmission construction, and placement of transition pieces on top of monopiles in preparation for turbine installation.
