GE Vernova plans to invest nearly $100 million in four US wind power manufacturing facilities over the next two years in a bid to meet “surging electricity demand around the world”.
The company will carry out factory upgrades and office renovations and also invest in tooling and fixtures at four plants in Florida, New Mexico, New York and North Dakota.
It makes components for its 3MW onshore wind turbines at its plant in Pensacola, FL, components for its 6MW onshore wind turbines at its Schenectady, NY factory, and wind turbine blades at its plant in Grand Forks, ND. It services wind turbine components at its plant in Amarillo, NM.
GE Vernova declined to say by how much the investments would increase production at each of the facilities.
The US wind power investments are part of newly $600 million in spending earmarked for its US factories and facilities in the next two years. GE Vernova will also expand gas turbine manufacturing and its grid solutions and nuclear businesses.
The investments come as the US wind power sector faces great uncertainty following the inaugration of Donald Trump as president. Shortly after taking office, Trump issued an executive order calling for an indefinite pause on seabed leasing for offshore wind on the country’s outer continental shelf. He also ordered a review of existing offshore wind seabed leases and asked federal agencies to stop issuing permits for wind farms – onshore or offshore.
GE Vernova explained that the planned $600 million US investments over the next two years are designed “to meet surging electricity demand around the world”.
