Masdar-controlled Terna Energy and Greek clean power firm Motor Oil Renewable Energy are jointly developing what they hope will be Greece’s first offshore wind farm.
The pair said they have the right to develop a 400MW pilot offshore wind farm in the sea area south of Alexandroupolis and north of Samothrace near the border with Turkey.
They aim to complete the project by the end of the decade.
The pair added that they “highlight the benefits of offshore wind farms to the national and local economy, as well as the harmonious coexistence of offshore wind farms with sectors such as shipping and tourism”.
Terna and Motor Oil declined to comment on whether they need further approvals for the project, what they plan to do with the electricity produced by the wind farm, whether they plan to use floating platforms or fixed-bottom foundations, or whether the planned site is one of the demonstration areas identified in a national offshore wind strategy.
