BOEM to assess interest in US offshore wind off Guam

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is consulting on offshore wind power leasing off the coast of the US Pacific territory of Guam.

It will invite input on site conditions, marine resources, and ocean uses near the potential area during the 90-day consulation, which will run between 6 January and 7 April. Wind farm developers will also be able to nominate specific areas for leasing.

BOEM hopes to assess commercial interest in offshore wind off Guam and "identify areas where offshore wind development would have the least impact", it explained.

Guam is a US territory located 9,700km west of the US mainland. As of 2022, it had a population of 168,000.

The consultation is part of a bid to help Guam rely more on renewable energy sources. Guam has a target of generating half of its electricity from renewables by 2035 and 100% by 2045.

By the time this consultation closes, known wind power opponent Donald Trump will be in office. Trump has threatened to slow offshore wind development "from day one".
