US offshore wind farm seeks new delay as turbine search continues

Invenergy has asked for a five-month development pause of the 2.4GW Leading Light offshore wind farm off New Jersey – its second request for a delay.

The US company, which is co-developing the project with New York-based EnergyRE, has asked for an extension – until 20 May 2025 – of state regulators’ order approving the project. The approval lays out a timetable for the development.

“This additional time will allow us to continue to navigate ongoing market shifts and supply chain challenges as we work to advance development of this important project for New Jersey,” said Wes Jacobs, Leading Light Wind project director.

Invenergy previously had an extension until 20 December 2024.

The developer said it has had difficulty obtaining a “viable” turbine for the project after GE Vernova axed development of its 18MW offshore turbine. In documents filed with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), Invenergy claimed its second choice, Siemens Gamesa, then said it would institute a “substantial” price increase.

According to Associated Press, the project has had particular difficulty sourcing blades. Leading Light declined to comment to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç on this assertion.

"The board will issue a decision on the motion at a future meeting," said an NJBPU spokeswoman.
