European Energy targets German wind farm repowering with new joint venture

Renewables developer European Energy and investment firm Novo Holdings have formed a joint venture to repower 17 operational wind farms in Germany.

They plan to replace the projects’ “outdated” wind turbines with modern turbines, European Energy explained.

Since the projects were commissioned between 2002 and 2008, “significant advances” in wind turbine technology have resulted in more efficient machines that can generate substantially more power from the same wind resources, it added.

The wind farms currently have a combined capacity of 151.9MW. The partners expect to more than triple this after repowering.

European Energy and Novo Holdings have already secured most of the permitting approvals needed for and the projects are in advanced stages of development.

The wind farms are forecast to come online between 2027 and 2030.
