Goldwind has secured a 105.4MW turbine order in Brazil – the first order for turbines made at its recently opened factory in Camaçari in the east of the country.
The Chinese turbine maker will supply 17 of its GWH182 6.2MW turbines for the Paraíso Farol and Pedra de Amolar projects in Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil’s north-east.
The projects are being developed by SPIC Brasil, the Brazilian unit of Chinese power giant SPIC.
Goldwind will also service the turbines for 30 years.
It will assemble the turbines at its Camaçari factory with imported and local components.
Goldwind acquired the Camaçari factory from General Electric earlier this year. It is its first overseas turbine production plant.
Goldwind – the world’s leading turbine supplier last year – is not the only Chinese manufacturer targeting projects outside of its home market.
Fierce competition in their home market has prompted Chinese OEMs to increasingly target overseas markets, according to BloombergNEF.
Wood Mackenzie expects Chinese OEMs to focus primarily on the onshore segment of emerging markets, gigawatt-scale green hydrogen projects in the Middle East and Africa, and to compete “fiercely” with western rivals in Latin America and Asia Pacific.
