Germany retains price cap for 2025 onshore wind tenders

Germany has retained the €73.50/MWh price cap for onshore wind auction rounds in 2025.

The federal network agency, the Bundesnetzagentur, explained: “The positive upward trend in bid volumes has not yet led to a significant reduction in the award values. In addition, the forecast electricity generation costs have remained stable compared to the previous year.”

Prices have remained stable across the four onshore wind auctions held this year, with average successful bids in each round tracking close to the ceiling price. Two of these auctions were oversubscribed.

Developers secured power deals for nearly 11GW of onshore wind capacity in German auctions in 2024

Bärbel Heidebroek, president of the German wind power association, said keeping the price cap consistent at €73.50/MWh gave “an important signal for planning security”, and added: “Despite rising prices for systems and construction services, this lays the foundation for the realisation of future projects.”

The Bundesnetzagentur had increased the price cap for tenders to €73.50/MWh from 2023 to enable more developers to compete amid rising inflation and raw material costs.
