Watch: Transformer triggers fire at Mexico wind farm

Firefighters were called to extinguish a fire at the La Venta 3 wind farm in southern Mexico after the transformer caught fire following an explosion.

The fire brigade for the southern city of Juchitán de Zaragoza took several hours to extinguish the flames.

Nobody was injured in the resulting blaze, but the fire did cause some damage and blackouts in local villages.

The fire service released a video of the incident, which happened in late November, on X.

Mexico’s state electricity firm Comision Federal de Electricidad has not yet explained the cause of the fire, which some local people blamed on overheating.

Launched in 2011, La Venta III consists of 120 Siemens Gamesa G52-850 turbines. Iberdrola sold the assets to investment fund MIP in a deal backed by the Mexican state.
