Uniper to develop UK green hydrogen site near offshore wind hub

Germany-based energy company Uniper has begun a public consultation on its plans to develop a new green hydrogen production facility at Killingholme, in north-east England’s Humber region, which is an offshore wind hub.

Uniper has begun consulting on its planned Humber green hydrogen production facility in north-east England

The company outlined proposals for the Humber H2ub (Green) project earlier this year. A full application for development consent is due to be submitted in 2025. It will include plans for an initial electrolytic hydrogen production capacity of up to 120MW, with the potential for an additional 200MW.

The Humber is one of four target locations in the UK, where the country’s government is supporting the creation of new industrial hubs.

The hydrogen would be supplied to the nearby Humber Refinery, one of several energy-intensive businesses in the region that are unlikely to be able to use electricity for heat.

From 2029, the hydrogen would be used to replace some refinery fuel gas in industrial-scale fired heaters, as part of efforts by the owner – US fossil fuel company Phillips 66 – to reduce the refinery’s scope 1 operational emissions. The refinery is expected to use 45t per day of green hydrogen (equivalent to 100MW electrical capacity).

The source of the electricity for the project has not been specified. Uniper said it could come from future on-site development or low-carbon power generation, which could be directly connected to the electrolyser or transported via the national grid, enabled by power purchase agreements and renewable guarantees of origin.
