Cutting edge: Sungrow Wind shows its commitment to innovation with grid-forming technology

A pioneer in wind power components in China, Sungrow Wind’s grid-forming technology can diversify the future of renewable energy systems.

28 November 2024

As the global energy landscape transforms, integrating renewable energy sources presents complex technical challenges. Renewable energy’s inherent intermittency and volatility can result in grid instability, a problem seeks to solve through advanced grid-forming converter technologies.

Sungrow Wind believes its grid-forming technology can mitigate the most critical challenges in modern renewable energy infrastructure. Its grid-forming converters offer a solution capable of:

  • Operating reliably under weak grid conditions

  • Providing rapid responses to voltage and phase angle changes

  • Supporting power system stability without traditional synchronous sources

A decade of technological leadership

Sungrow Wind has been at the forefront of grid-forming technology since 2016. In 2019, it successfully achieved the grid connection of a grid-forming doubly fed induction generator, while recently, it has completed on-site validations for grid-forming support in ultra-weak grids, fault ride-through, and inertia support.

In one offshore full-power wind turbine, Sungrow Wind successfully achieved grid-forming and black-start operations, as well as field-level applications of grid-forming wind turbines. These successes highlight why the company is leading the way in formulating industry standards for grid-forming wind turbine technology.

Energy islands and beyond

Grid-forming technology will be critical in developing diverse energy supply systems, particularly in emerging energy islands – designed to create self-contained, sustainable power networks that can operate independently or with minimal connection to the main electrical grid.

Sungrow Wind’s grid-forming products address the key challenges of energy islands:

  • Successfully apply GFM technology with Sungrow Wind GFM converter and GFM grid simulator

  • Ensuring grid stability and security in combining GFM and isolated energy systems

  • Comprehensive utilisation of a variety of energy sources, including wind energy, hydrogen energy, marine energy, etc

Sungrow believes that its grid-forming technologies can create stable, reliable energy islands by providing flexible power output and fault tolerance.

Market performance and technological capabilities

Sungrow Wind is emerging as a significant player in the wind energy sector. In 2023, the company shipped 32GW of wind converters globally, representing a 40% increase from the previous year and securing a 34% market share. Notably, their offshore wind converters saw 190% year-on-year growth, highlighting the increasing focus on offshore wind technologies. By April 2024, Sungrow had accumulated 100GW in global wind converter shipments.

The company's product range reflects the ongoing technological challenges in wind energy conversion. Sungrow Wind offers wind converters with power ratings from 1.5MW to 26MW, addressing diverse project requirements across voltage ranges from 690V to 3300V. A recent development is its 1800V doubly-fed converter, which reduces grid-side current by 37%, potentially addressing some of the efficiency challenges in wind power transmission.

Sungrow's deployment of a 20MW wind converter demonstrates the industry's movement towards larger, more powerful wind energy solutions, a trend driven by the need for more efficient renewable energy generation.

Strategic outlook

Sungrow Wind is demonstrating how innovative grid-forming solutions can accelerate the global transition to clean and reliable renewable energy. This transition is only possible through a focus on developing technology that creates value for customers, and brings together global wind power organisations to activate an international market committed to driving change through renewable energy.
