Denmark approves European Energy's open door offshore wind farm

The Danish Energy Agency has granted developer European Energy and utility Sonfor a construction permit to build their planned 165MW Lillebælt Syd project.

The offshore wind farm is planned for a site in the Strait of Lillebælt, close to the city of Sønderborg in southern Denmark.

European Energy expects to start construction in 2027, with commercial operations due to begin in 2029.

The project will deliver power to Sonfor’s public network.

Oil major TotalEnergies is due to become a majority owner of the project. Once the transaction closes, TotalEnergies will own 72.25% of Lillebælt Syd, Sonfor will own 15% and European Energy will own 12.75%.

Lillebælt Syd was one of 33 wind farms submitted through Denmark’s ‘open door scheme’, whereby developers apply to build an offshore wind farm of a chosen capacity in a specific area of their choosing. However, Denmark paused the scheme in February 2023 – though later resumed permitting for a number of projects, including for Lillebælt Syd – and then scrapped it in order to move to a centralised tendering system.
