Why the wind industry is increasingly reliant on China for key commodities

The wind industry is increasingly reliant on China for supplies of the most important commodities and raw materials, a “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç investigation shows.

“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç looked at five key commodities used extensively in the construction of wind turbines: Rare earths, carbon fibre, steel, copper and aluminium

Our report reveals that China increasingly holds the whip hand regarding the supply of raw and processed versions of these critical commodities, and the wind industry as well as policymakers will have to find find ways to create more diverse supply chains, be it through innovations or policy support for local production.

Increased recycling of these commodities will play an important role in protecting future supplies. However geopolitical events and regional rivalries between global powers could send prices soaring, either because of limited supplies or increased trade tariffs.
