European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen today (19 September) vowed to help repair, connect and stabilise Ukraine’s energy system as winter approaches.
She told reporters that the EU is helping to dismantle a thermal power plant in Lithuania and ship it piece by piece to Ukraine, export 2GW of power to the war-torn country, and dispatch solar panels to 21 hospitals.
Von der Leyen also announced a further €160 million in aid to support Ukraine’s energy security, with €60 million of humanitarian aid for shelters and heaters, and €100 million for repairing power plants and dispatching solar panels.
She made the announcement as the International Energy Agency unveiled a ten-point action plan to boost Ukraine’s energy security this winter.
“As temperatures are dropping, the European Union is ready to step up its support to Ukraine. We are preparing for the winter together,” von der Leyen said.
