With state construction approval already granted in June, the project is now set to transition into the delivery phase. The 20,000km2 Central-West Orana area is the first REZ in Australia to reach this step.
It will deliver at least 4.5GW of clean electricity across the state, with the transmission project expected to attract up to A$20 billion ($13.5 billion) of private investment in large-scale wind, solar and energy storage projects.
It is being developed under the NSW electricity infrastructure roadmap, which aims for at least 12GW of renewable energy generation and 2GW of long-duration storage by 2030.
The Energy Corporation of NSW is responsible for delivering the five REZs planned under the roadmap.
It said construction works on the transmission line network for the Central-West Orana zone are expected to start in late 2024, with initial operation anticipated in 2028.
It expects to award shortly the final contract to the preferred network operator to design, build, operate and maintain the transmission project.
At the end of July, the Energy Corporation of NSW lodged the scoping report for the New England REZ network infrastructure project, which could unlock up to 8GW of network capacity to deliver renewable energy to the state.
