Groups fighting offshore wind development in the US are joining forces to protest in a more unified manner, according to the founders.
The National Offshore-wind Opposition Alliance (NOOA) is inviting local groups from all over the US to join, says president Mandy Davis, who previously founded an anti-wind group in central California called the React Alliance.
It is a single-issue coalition to be made up of environmental, fishing, community organisations and Tribal Nations, says the non-profit group.
The new alliance held its first virtual meeting last week (7 August), according to reports, but has not released a list of its members so far.
“Our mission is to protect the oceans, the Great Lakes, and nearby communities from the negative impacts of industrialisation by offshore wind ‘farms’ and the nearshore and onshore infrastructure necessary to support and deliver electricity to the grid,” the group stated.
“We work to educate the public, mobilise affected communities, dialogue with government officials, engage the media, and strategically litigate to end the threat of offshore wind proliferation.”
NOOA will be politically neutral and will not take donations from the fossil-fuel industry, Davis has said.
Numerous local groups in opposition to offshore wind exist in the US, mostly on the east coast where offshore wind development is under way.
