The provincial government of Buenos Aires has denied power firm Central Puerto a permit to develop its 161MW Abrojo Alto wind farm.
Provincial environment minister Daniela Vilar informed local communities that authorities also planned to declare the area a protected landscape, which could create a further obstacle to the wind farm’s development.
Central Puerto, one of Argentina’s largest energy firms, planned to install 23 turbines with power ratings of 7MW in the Sierra la Peregrina, a hilly area in the south-west of the province.
But the project was opposed by local people who feared it could impact the local environment and tourism industry.
