CIP-backed JV plans 1.4GW wind farm in Chile for green ammonia project

HNH Energy has applied for a licence to build a 1.4GW wind farm in southern Chile as part of an $11 billion complex to produce green ammonia for export.

HNH is a joint venture between Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Austrian energy firms AustriaEnergy and Ökowind.

The complex in Gregorio Bay is the largest ever project to be submitted for permitting before Chile’s environmental assessment service. If built, the 194-turbine project would be one of the world’s largest onshore wind farms.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 with operations beginning in 2030.

A second stage, at an earlier stage of development, would expand the wind complex by another 2.1GW

The project is the most advanced of a series of giant hydrogen complexes in development in Chile’s southernmost Magallanes region as the South American country seeks to take advantage of its potential for renewables to become a leading export of sustainable fuels.

Other companies looking to exploit the region’s wind potential include HIF Global and TotalEnergies.
