Green light for hydrogen project to feed UK chemicals site

UK-based green hydrogen developer Meld Energy has received approval from local authorities to construct the first 100MW electrolytic green hydrogen production facility of several it wants to build across the UK.

Meld Energy said the £250 million (€298 million) project  will use the region’s “abundant onshore and offshore renewable electricity” to produce 13,400 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

The East Riding of Yorkshire council gave outline planning permission for the green hydrogen production facility to be located at Saltend, in Hull, to meet up to 30% of existing hydrogen demand at Saltend Chemicals Park.

Work on the facility is expected to begin in 2026, with operation beginning in late 2028.

Owned by PX, Saltend Chemicals Park is home to BP Petrochemicals Technology, Vivergo Fuels, Yara, Mitsubishi Chemicals UK, Ineos and Air Products, as well as the Triton Power station.

Meld Energy CEO Chris Smith said the approval was “an important milestone” for the project, and for the company’s future plans.

The project was said to have the potential to increase its capacity to over 200MW in a second development stage.

In April, Meld Energy applied for grant funding from round two of a government hydrogen support scheme for up to 875MW of hydrogen production. Winners will be announced later this year. Meld Energy said it would begin work in November if successful.
